1701 - Paris - Lyon - 1763
Oil Painting on Panel, 7½ x 5 inches (19 x 12.5 cm)
Signed and inscribed Romae & Dated 173(?)6 with extensive inscription on the verso
Engraved by Masquelier (BSHAF 1969)
Frontier was a pupil of Hall and is best known for his religious and mythological paintings exhibited in Paris between 1743 and 1750. He became a member of the Academy in 1744 and in 1756 he moved to Lyon where he became Professor of Drawing.
The last figures of the date are not really legible but an old tablet on the frame gave it as 1736 and there is no reason to doubt the dating, which presumably also records a visit by the artist to Rome at this time.
