We have been privileged to sell our paintings and works of art to a great diversity of people, some of whom have become good friends. But the nature of the business is such that we offer total discretion to our clients; in this we differ markedly from the Auctioneers, who trumpet their successes world wide through the press. They are of course rather more silent about the misattributions, missed works and failures to sell.
The trade is often accused of a 'conspiracy of silence', of excessive secrecy and in addition gets no credit for the fine works we have handled. But the idea of Public Auction, and Private Dealer is a useful reminder of differing functions. When I was young it was said that the auctioneer represented the seller and the dealer looked after the buyer, selecting, authenticating, restoring and framing. To some extent this is still true - and the autioneers are acting quite improperly in trying to pretend to be an 'institution' representing both sides like a professional counsellor. They are a successful business, effective dealers - and even lawyers don't try to act for both sides.
Happily there is an exception to the iron rule of discretion - when we have sold to public institutions, museums and galleries, it is customary for private dealers to be allowed to announce the fact at the same time as the acquiring organisation. We therefore proudly state that over along period and in no particular order, we have sold to the organisations listed herebelow. Where there is a click button you can use it and sometimes see an illustration of what it is we sold. We shall try to fill them all in slowly from the old photographs or new colour ones in the case of items sold since we introduced the website - in many cases there may be more than one sale and we do not undertake to illustrate of list them all:
